Join us for our weekly Lechayim series! Each event begins with yoga from a chair at 11am, followed by a lunch and a wide variety of programming that is different each week. The schedule usually runs as below:

Please join your neighbors, volunteers and Jewish Social Services staff for candle lighting, challah, wine, songs and discussion to usher in Shabbat, along with the opportunity to recite Kaddish. We look forward to spending this special time together with you! We celebrate Shabbat at Capitol Lakes on the first Friday of each month, led by JSS Rabbi Renee Bauer or Hillel Rabbi Andrea Steinberger, with assistance from JSS Staff and UW-Hillel student volunteers.

JSS has an exciting event planned to thank our many volunteer partners from all over Madison! Our volunteer community is essential to helping us delivery our services and programming, so we wanted to plan a special night to show our gratitude. Director Kai Mishlove, Rabbi Renee Bauer, and Paul Borowski will speak, along with volunteers from a multitude of JSS programs. Refreshments and mingling to follow. Please join us!

A Friday erev Shabbat service led by Rabbi Renee Bauer, with assistance from additional JSS staff. Join us as we light candles, eat Challah, say Kiddush, and sing songs around the table, every third Friday of the month.

“There are Jews in Texas?”  Nearly forty years ago, the documentary film West of Hester Street attempted to shed light on the history of Jews in Texas by narrating the story of the Galveston Movement, a project that brought almost 10,000 Jews to the United States via the port on Galveston Island in the years before World War I.   

Today, Texas Jewish history and the larger history of Jews and Jewish communities across the southern United States are enjoying a 21st-century renaissance, as evidenced by the work of the Institute for Southern Jewish Life in Mississippi, the formation of the Joan and Stanford Alexander South Texas Jewish Archives at Rice University in 2018, and the opening of the new Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience in New Orleans.  Nevertheless, outside of Texas and the Deep South, Jews who have made this region their home remain something of an obscure curiosity.

Join us for a celebration of community – including our clients, staff, volunteers, and organizational partners, featuring a vegetarian potluck, games, music and a special mayoral proclamation honoring World Refugee Day! Kids and families welcome.

Now in its fifth year, the HOME Refugee Steering Committee at the Lynden Sculpture Garden invites you to observe HOME 2023: WORLD REFUGEE DAY in a series of outdoor events and programs that celebrate Milwaukee’s refugee communities through art, food, fashion, and performance.

HOME is the theme of our work with refugee community leaders, community members, Call & Response artists, and allies. The HOME Refugee Steering Committee is building a space of leading, coming together, and celebrating refugee.
